Benson, Ariz. - Seven people - including six members of a family - were killed late last night in a head-on collision that was caused by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 10 near Benson, authorities said.
At least one other person was injured and taken by helicopter to a Tucson hospital. That person's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities said the driver of the family's minivan headed eastbound on westbound Interstate 10 and collided with a shuttle van. All six people in the minivan and the driver of the shuttle were killed.
Preliminary reports indicated that the dead were three adults and four children, said Hanna Meeker, a dispatcher with the Department of Public Safety.
Officers responded to I-10 near Mescal Road at about 10:45 p.m.
DPS Sgt. Ed Slechta said the accident initially closed down the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10. By 11:45 p.m., I-10 was reopened except for one westbound lane, a dispatcher said.
