--------

An Ill-Omened Name.

A year or two ago the town of red Dog, in Nevada county, was destroyed by fire; and now we learn that Dogtown, Butte County, has been overtaken by the same fate. These summer fires, feeding destructively on our small mountain towns, are terrific inflictions, but there would be some compensation in their occurrences if they obliterated the odious names of the places consumed. Let us hope that when Dogtown is rebuild the masses presiding at its christening will not be canine.
