INDIO CRASH KILLS 6.

6 OTHERS INJURED.

Indio, Calif. - (UPI) - Two cars loaded with transient workers crashed head-on late last night on a county road, killing six persons and injuring six others.
The California Highway Patrol said the cars collided on the two-lane Jackson Road south of here. The impact crumpled both cars into almost half their original size, officers said.
One of the cars apparently was en route to a festival in Indio at the time of the crash, patrolmen said.
Tentative identification by Deputy Coroner Robert L. Drake showed all the victims were transient workers from nearby truck farms.
In one car, an old model sedan, the dead were:
LLOYD WALTER HAMMOND, about 30;
his brother, FLOYD WALKER HAMMOND, possibly his twin;
the driver J. T. HILL, 30;
and his wife, BETTY, 33, Drake said.
The dead in the other car were identified as the driver LORENZO M. GARCIA, 18;
and FRANCISCO DELAFUCATE, JR., 20.
That was the car officers said was en route to the fair.
The injured were taken to Coachella Valley Hospital in Indio. They were, from the HAMMOND car, JOHN ARTHUR ABNEY, 38; and LINDA HILL, eight months.
Injured in the other auto were ROBERT GONZALEZ, 17; LOUIS HOLQUIN, 16; MANUEL CONTU, 20; and IGNAETO HIDALGO, 19.
