Sapinero, CO Train Wreck, Oct 1896
A FREIGHT WRECK
Sapinero, Colo., Oct. 23.---An extra freight train was wrecked here today by falling through a burned bridge. Engineer Lathrop and Fireman Williams escaped by jumping, sustaining only a few scalds and bruises. The head brakeman, Jerry Maydale, was caught under the cars of burning coal and burned to death. He was about 40 years of age and leaves two small children in California. A track is being built around the wreck to enable traffic to proceed as soon as possible.
