A Narrow Escape From Death In Explosion
San Francisco, March 10. - With a flash and
roar that shook every building in the block gas
that had already; taken the life of
GEORGE G. SCHMIDT
in his room at 646 Howard street, exploded
this morning and mangled the dead body of
SCHMIDT, and reached forth to claim other
victims in the passageway.
The explosion of gas hurled
JAS. BARNES,
proprietor of the lodging house, over the
banisters and down the stairs and dropping him
stunned and bleeding.
CHAS. F. BROOKS,
a lodger, who was holding a candle, and
assisting BARNES
in his search for
SCHMIDT, who, it was feared had ended
his life, was blown across the hallway and
partly up the stairs and against the wall. He
was thrown with such force that blood gushed
from his swollen face.
