Will Moon Family,
Ed Perry House Fire
Pleasant Grove Township,
Butler Co., IA
January 1914
Will Moon and family, who live on the
Ed.
Perry farm northeast of Greene in Pleasant Grove
township, were burned out at an early hour
Friday morning. Mrs. Moon was awakened
about two o'clock and smelled smoke, but did not
arouse the family until later when it was
discovered the house was all on fire and all
that could be done was
to
get out and save their lives. The piano
was near a door and was gotten out and a few
other things. Everything else was burned,
including clothing, furniture and family
keepsakes that have more than money value.
In the cellar were the supply of vegetables, and
a good many bushels of potatoes and over two
hundred cans of fruit. Mr. Moon had also
put two big loads of coal in the cellar the day
before.
The fire in some way caught from the furnace
and when discovered was all in between the
plastering and siding and it would have been
hard work to have saved the property even though
it had been located in town where the fire
company could have had a chance at it.
This was the old Perry home and was a large
well built house. Mr. Perry had a thousand
dollars insurance on it. The Moon family
had some insurance on their household effects
but the policies were destroyed in the fire and
will require some delay in the matter of
adjustment.
Owing to the amount of work in taking care of
the stock and looking after the farm, it will
probably be necessary to build a temporary house
to be used until spring when Mr. Perry can build
a new house.
The Moon family have the sympathy of their
many friends in their misfortune.
