Fonda, Iowa Hailstorm
May
28, 1899
LEFT A PATH OF RUIN.
Town Trees Stripped of Foliage and Property
Wrecked.
DES MOINES, Iowa, May 28.-A special from
Fonda, Iowa, says:
A hail storm [sic] of greater severity than was
ever witnessed by any of the citizens of this
section passed over Fonda and vicinity between 6
and 7 o’clock this evening. The hail storm [sic]
raged for one hour. Many of the hail stones were
from one to one and a half inches in diameter,
and driven by a strong wind from the northwest,
when they struck buildings and board fences, the
report was like the discharge of musketry. The
hail at the close of the storm was lying in
drifts six to eight inches deep on lawns and two
feet on Main street, and the streets and brick
pavements were flooded with water and slush.
Nearly all the unprotected windows on the north
and west sides of the houses are broken and a
great deal of damage has been done to the
buildings and furniture. The trees are leafless
and everything has the aspect of winter. The
hail was preceded by an electric storm. The hail
was accompanied by a heavy fall of rain. This is
the fourth time hail has fallen in this section
this spring.
