Brewster Hotel Explosion
January 1, 1893
Mysterious Explosion at Chicago
Chicago, Jan 2 – The guests of the Brewster
hotel on Dearborn street, just south of Van
Buren, were startled at 10:30 o’clock last
evening by a loud explosion, which shook the
building and broke nearly every pain [sic] of
glass on the Dearborn street front. Many of the
guests had retired for the night, and the noise
of the explosion suddenly awakening them caused
a great deal of alarm, and a panic was narrowly
averted. No one was hurt, but three clerks were
slightly stunned. The explosion is a mystery.
