Borden, Indiana Fire
March 31, 1894
New Albany, Ind., March 31. -- the
little town of Borden, Ind., 18 miles north of
here and composed of about 1,000 inhabitants,
was nearly wiped out by fire which
started
in the Burns' flour mills at 3 a.m. The
flames were fanned by a strong wind and spread
rapidly until the entire business portion of the
town and about a dozen residences were burning.
Two fire engines were sent from here on a special
train, and a fire steamer was also send from
Salem, Ind., but arrived too late to be of
service. Six stores and eighteen dwellings
were entirely destroyed and a number of other
houses were badly damaged. The total loss will
aggregate $125,000, and the amount of insurance
is at present unknown.
