A TERRIBLE TORNADO IN KANSAS.
Topeka, April 15. -- A tornado struck
Cottonwood Station, on the Atchison, Topeka &
Santa Fe Railway, at about 4 o'clock on the
afternoon of Saturday, April 13. The Cottonwood
Hotel and several buildings were blown down.
MRS. MILLER
was killed, and her husband and children were
dangerously hurt. MRS.
WALTERS and two children,
FRED SMITH,
wife and three children,
JOHN MERRITT, LIZZIE MERRITT and MRS. MATTHEWS
were badly hurt. At Jacobs Creek
MRS. BOGUE
had her leg broken. At Phenis Creek
EDWARD DAVIS' youngest child was
dangerously hurt. Mr.
OSBORN, living on the prairie, had
two children killed.
MRS. KATE ROSS, living on Dry Creek,
was seriously, perhaps fatally hurt. The storm
reached Emporia at about half past four o'clock.
Soden's mill was badly damaged, and
the roof of the Normal school building injured.
But little damage was done in the centre [sic]
of the city. In the country the destruction of
property was great. Houses and barns were torn
up. Ten loaded cars were blown from the track at
Cottonwood station.
