DISASTROUS FIRES
Million Dollar Loss in Springfield to
Phelps Publishing Co.
Springfield, Mass., Jan. 28. -- The
office of the Phelps Publishing company
comprising four brick buildings, one of the
finest in New England was destroyed by fire
today. The lost is almost a million
dollars and is well insured. The fire was
caused by spontaneous combustion among benzine
soaked rags in the basement of the building.
No one was hurt. The company
publishes several [illegible] and has arranged
for their publication in other cities until
their plan is rebuilt. About 450 persons
are out of employment.
