Winona, Minnesota - Postcard History Series

After settlement began in Winona, MN, in 1851, the city's growth was fueled by the Mississippi riverboat trade. Groups of immigrants passed through the "Gate City," and many stayed, founding enduring ethnic communities and building a city that for a brief time rivaled Minneapolis. The settlement covered the sandy flats with houses, churches, colleges, and factories, and carved the hill "Wapasha's Cap" into the landmark now known as Sugar Loaf.

Winona, Minnesota Tornado

August 6, 1907

DEADLY WORK BY TORNADOES

Several States Are Scourged by Destructive Storm.

LIFE AND PROPERTY LOST.

In Addition to the Wind, Lightning, Hail and Rain Play Havoc – Train Wrecked by the Wind in Minnesota.

Southern Minnesota Swept.
Winona, Minn., August 7.
-- The most violent wind and rain storm ever known in this section passed over southern Minnesota last evening. Scores of frame buildings in Winona were wrecked. Scarcely a shade tree remains undamaged. Railroad traffic east of here is suspended owing to washouts. The Green Bay passenger train which left Winona last evening was wrecked by the wind east of Winona. Two coaches being carried a distance of 8 feet. H. EICHENHAUSEN, of Sparta, Wis., a passenger; H. FULLER, of Marillan, Wis., mail clerk, and Brakeman SCHULTZE, of Marillan, were seriously injured. Several hundred feet of track of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad north of Trempeleau were washed out.

Rain, Hail, Lightning and Wind.
St. Paul, Minn., August 7.
-- Rain, hail, lightning and severe wind storms, the latter approaching in severity a tornado, late yesterday, did damage in Minnesota, Wis., and northern Iowa which at present is incalculable owing to the telegraph and telephone lines being badly crippled.

The Atlanta Constitution Georgia 1907-08-08

DAMAGE BY STORM

Lives are Lost and Crops in Many Places are Ruined

A tornado ... swept over the southern part of Minnesota, northern Iowa, the southwestern end of Wisconsin and a part of Illinois.

Many houses were destroyed in Winona and the roofs were torn off twenty large factory buildings.  The lighting plant was wrecked, leaving the town in darkness.  The power house of the local street car company was put out of commission.  The cars in the street were overturned and one of them carried against the side of a store.  Fronts of the stores were blown in and the wind carried all kinds of stock from the shelves and counters.

The Nashua Reporter, Nashua, IA 8 Aug 1907
