TORNADO AND HEAVY HAIL
WRECKED THE TOWN OF HIGGINSVILLE, MO., LATE
MONDAY AFTERNOON
HAIL WAS A FOOT DEEP
Horses Killed In the Street and All Windows
Broken--One Man Received Fatal Injuries.
Higginsville, Mo., March 21--Fifty buildings
partly wrecked, one man mortally wounded and
several others hurt, the town in darkness and
the streets strewn with debris as the result of
a tornado and hail storm which struck this place
late this afternoon.
Hail on the street was a foot deep within
five minutes after the storm came, some of the
stones were as large as hens' eggs.
Dozens of trees in the town were blown down
and several horses killed on the street. The
hail-storm was followed by a terrific down pour
of rain which flooded nearly every cellar in the
town. The path of the tornado was narrow, about
two blocks of the business portion of the town
being damaged. Two other towns, Corden and Alma,
are said to be considerably damaged. According
to reports tonight, several houses in both
places have been wrecked, but the exact extent
of the damage is not known.
The grocery store of
Al Enzley, in the business part of
this place, was wrecked by the storm.
John Nolzen,
a clerk, was fatally injured in the wreck of
Enzley's grocery in Higginsville. It is
estimated that 2,000 windows were broken and
more than fifty houses unroofed here.
