Kalispell, Montana

Flour Mill Elevator Fire

August 5, 1900

ELEVATOR BURNED AT KALISPELL

It Was Completely Destroyed – A Loss of $24,000 – Origin of the Fire a Mystery.

Special Dispatch to the Standard.

Kalispell, Aug 5. – At about 6 o’clock to-night the large elevator building belonging to C. A. Peplow & Co. caught fire and all the contents, including machinery, is a total loss. The building is also completely destroyed. The upper part of the flour mill adjoining and connecting is badly burned, but will not cost much to make repairs, owing the splendid work of the fire department. The contents of the mill are badly damaged by smoke and water and the amount of stick on hand in the mill is practically ruined. It will entail a loss of over $24,000, but the firm carries a $32,000 insurance, and amply protected.

How the fire originated is unknown, the building was all ablaze when first discovered. This is the first flour mill erected in Kalispell, and the firm were doing a fine business, having to run overtime in order to meet their orders. They will rebuild as soon as possible. The fire department had to work hard to save surrounding property from destruction. Both buildings are frame and burned like timber. The mill had been shut down all day. One of the owners, Mr. Fenwick of Missoula, was in the office in the mill building at the start of the fire, but knows nothing to its origin. None of the new wheat crop was in the elevator, as is not been thrashed yet.
