Camden, New Jersey Fire
November 8, 1902
BIG FIRE IN CAMDEN, N. J.
Camden, N. J., Nov. 8. – The plants of the
Nonpareil Cork Manufacturing company, the Camden
Manufacturing company, manufacturers of
chemicals, and
McAndrews &
Forbes, liquor manufacturers,
comprising about a dozen frame buildings located
at Kaighns Point in the southern section of this
city, were destroyed by fire today. The combined
loss is estimated at $150,000. The burned
district covers an area of about three city
blocks along the Delaware river. The British
steamer Conway, from India, loaded with licorice
root, was moored to McAndrews & Forbes’ wharf
and was saved from destruction by the timely
arrival of the Philadelphia fire boat Ashbridge,
which towed her to a place of safety.
JOHN DOUGHERTY,
fireman on the tug Ashbridge, was badly burned
and was taken to the Cooper hospital. The origin
of the fire is unknown.
FIRE RUINS CAMDEN MILLS
Big Industrial Plants Destroyed, Entailing Heavy
Losses.
Camden, Nov 8 – The Camden whiting works,
Nonpareil cloth works and the large warehouse of
Mellor-Rittenhouse
licorice works were entirely destroyed by fire
this morning.
The loss will reach $500,000. Insurance is not
known at this time. The fire started in the
whiting works and spread rapidly southward, a
stiff breeze blowing at the time, rendering the
work of the firemen difficult.
The entire department and three fire boats
worked hard to save the licorice plant. The
licorice works is now owned by the
McAndrews-Forbes
Co.
The fire destroyed more than a block on the
Delaware river front nearly four hundred feet
deep.
