Coney Island & Far Rockaway,

New York Fire

April 24, 1925

NEW YORK RESORTS SWEPT BY FLAMES

Coney Island and Far Rockaway Visited by Fire Causing Damage Estimated at $500,000.

New York, April 24, -- Coney Island and Far Rockaway, two of New York's best-known seashore resorts, were visited this afternoon by fires that caused damage estimated at $500,000.

A tiny spark, flying from an electric mortar machine, set the blaze in Far Rockaway, that destroyed the 350 room hotel, Tack-A-Pou-Sha, and 3,000 bath houses on Ostend beach.

The New Travmore hotel of 230 rooms and the Ostend hotel, 400 rooms, directly in the path of the fire, were saved from destruction by the prompt work of firemen of four seashore towns, who answered the fire alarms.

Swept by the west wind, embers from the beach fires carried to the far side of Far Rockaway, destroyed a $25,000 summer residence, caused slight damage to an old railroad station and started a brush blaze that swept across two miles of flat land before being halted.

A dozen beach bungalows were damaged. Five firemen were slightly injured.
Three old buildings on the Bowery at Coney Island, including INMAN'S casino, a landmark, were destroyed. The loss was estimated at $30,000. Four alarms were sounded for the blaze.

While the seashore fires were at their bright seven alarms were sounded in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, so that between 3 and 5 o'clock in the afternoon more than 40 per cent of New York's fire departments were on duty.
