FOUR MEN KILLED
IN WRECK
Freight Collision Near Utica, N. Y., Results
Fatally.

Utica, N. Y., Oct 8. Four men were killed
in a freight wreck on the Mohawk division of the
New York Central near the village of Oriskany
seven miles from here early this morning. The
dead are
SPENCER SHANNON
of Schenectady, engineer
ARGYLE SMITH of Rensselaer, fireman
GEORGE PALMER of Rensselaer, fireman
WILLIAM WIER of Albany, brakeman
Engineer JAMES HAGER was injured but
not seriously.
The wreck was caused by a collision between east
bound freight 1861 and light engine 1569.

WRECK
UTICA, N. Y., Oct. 8.--A head-on collision
near here on the New York Central between a
freight and a light engine killed four this
morning. The dead are:
ANGYLE SMITH,
fireman
GEORGE PALMERTON, fireman.
SPENCER SHANNON, engineer.
WILIAM WIER, brakeman.
The wreckage was terrible, covering the four
tracks, delaying traffic for hours.

Utica, N.Y., Oct.
8. -- One of the worst wrecks n the history
of the Mohawk division of the new York Central &
Hudson River railroad occurred early today in
the village of Oriskan, [sic] seven miles west of this
city. Four railroad men were killed and one was
injured.....
An eastbound freight train collided with a
light engine which was crossing from track three
to track four, thus causing the wreck, The crash
was a terrific one and in an instant all four of
the New York Central tracks were completely
blocked.
