Fredericktown, Ohio Fire

Fredericktown, O., Aug. 30. -- The entire business section of this
town was destroyed
by fire. The blaze started on the second floor of Lewis & Ward clothing
store and spread rapidly. The loss to buildings is estimated at $75,000
and to merchandise at $50,000.

FREDERICK THREATENED BY FIRE

Mt. Vernon, O., Aug. 29.-Fire which broke
out this afternoon threatens the entire business
district of the village of Fredericktown. A call
for fire fighting apparatus was received by Mt.
Vernon authorities this afternoon. The message
said that fire had already caused damage of
$50,000 and was spreading.
The fire started at 1 o'clock in a room over the
Lewis & Ward
clothing store in Main street. Its origin is
unknown. Fire Chief
Pickard of Mt. Vernon, who went to
the village with a part of the Mt. Vernon fire
apparatus, announced at 2:30 that the fire was
under control. Shortly after the fire started
the water works system of the village gave out,
and the old fashioned hand pump was pressed into
service.
The following business places were destroyed:
Beck's
racket store, Fox
meat market,
Miller's barber shop,
the Cassell
grocery, the
Howard restaurant,
Lewis & Ward
clothing store,
F. F. Hosack drug store, the
Harris meat market,
Walters & Darling barber shop.
The loss is estimated at $100,000, and it is
believed that sufficient insurance was carried
by the fire victims to cover the amount of the
loss.
