MT. VERNON MAN KILLED IN UTICA SUNDAY
AFTERNOON BY B. & O. PASSENGER TRAIN
Utica, April 22.-
LOREN DIAL, age 55 years, a resident
of Mt. Vernon, was struck and instantly killed
here about 12:30 Sunday afternoon by the second
section of B. and O. passenger train No., 7. The
accident occurred at a point a few hundred feet
south of the station. Dial was waiting to go to
his home and had been wandering about the
company’s right of way for some time previous to
the accident.
Dial came
to Utica Saturday afternoon and late in the
evening he was place in the village lockup in an
intoxicated condition, for safe keeping. He was
released Sunday morning that he might go to his
home. The only train north bound, which stops at
Utica is No. 3, due about 2:15 and he was
waiting for the arrival of this train.
The train which struck him was late and Dial
was not expecting it. It is evident that he
became confused and failed to realize his danger
until too late. He was struck and hurled from
the tracks. May bones were broken and death must
have been instantaneous, though the wheels of
the engine or train did not run over him.
The accident was witnessed by a number of
persons about the station. Then body was carried
to the baggage room and
Coroner Wiyiarce
notified. He made a hurried trip to Utica in an
automobile and viewed the body and took the
testimony of several witnesses. He will render a
verdict of accidental death.
Dial was
a married man and is survived by his wife and
five children, three of whom live at his home in
Mt. Vernon. He was a stone mason and was well
known in Knox and Licking counties.
The body was removed to his home in Mt.
Vernon where the funeral and burial will take
place.
