Gas Explosion
February 1, 1904
EXPLOSION KILLS TWO.
Natural Gas and Lighted Candle Cause Terrible
Tragedy.
Pittsburg, Feb. 1.—Henry
Magel and
Charles Magel are dead and
Mrs. Catherine Magel, Annie Magel and
Willie Magel seriously injured as the
result of a gas explosion at the Magel home at
West Liberty, a suburb of this city.
The elder Magel went to the cellar to get some
wine. He carried a lighted candle. Owing to a
leak in a gas pipe a large quantity had
accumulated in the cellar and an explosion
followed his entry.
Willie Magel, aged 13, was blown through the
side of the house, escaping with a sprained arm.
Otto, asleep on the third floor, was thrown
through a window and alighted on the roof. He
was uninjured. Charles, who slept with Otto, was
killed. The building was blown from its
foundations, rising fully five feet in the air.
When it descended the structure was a mass of
wreckage and in a few moments was enveloped in
flames.
