Blairsville, Pennsylvania
Flour Mill
Fire
July 31, 1888
Fire at Blairsville.
We are indebted to the Blairsville Enterprise,
for the account of the burning of
Capt. Healy’s
flouring mill. “Between the hours of two and
three o’clock yesterday morning, Blairsville
citizens were awakened from their slumbers by
the cry of fire, and on repairing to the scene
found the flouring mill enveloped in flames. In
a few minutes after the ringing of the alarm the
fire company appeared on the ground and three
streams of water were turned on the mill and
adjacent buildings. From the first no hope was
entertained of saving the mill. Only to the
complete system of water works and an efficient
fire department can be attributed the fact that
the disaster was no greater, as the mill was
within thirty or forty feet of other frame
buildings.
Mr. Healy
estimates his loss, which was total, there being
no insurance, at from $8,000 to $10,000.
Messrs, Findley &
McIntyre, who had the mill leased,
had an insurance of $2,000 on stock, which they
say will not near cover their loss. Mr. Healy’s
loss leaves him in a bad shape financially, and
to add to his misfortunes he has, for a
considerable length of time, been unable to do
any work on account of rheumatism.
