BALDWIN PATTERN WAREHOUSE BURNS
Designs for Engines Ordered by Russia Destroyed
in Strange Blaze
EDDYSTONE, PA., Nov. 11 – Two sections of
the pattern storehouse, known as Shop No 2, at
the Baldwin Locomotive Works, were destroyed by
the fire of unknown origin yesterday. Officials
declined to estimate the extent of the loss, but
many valuable patterns were destroyed, and it is
believed that the damage will amount to $25,000
or $30,000. Seven employes [sic] suffered burns
of the face.
The blaze was discovered in the extreme two ends
of the storehouse, and the plant firemen fought
the fire alone until it threatened to spread to
other buildings, when the fire department of
this city was called, some of the companies
responding.
Fire broke out in a similar storehouse standing
near, but the firemen saved it.
According to officials of the Baldwin Locomotive
Works, the patterns were for a special type of
heavy locomotive ordered by the Russian
government some time ago. They had been stored
in the building recently.
