Galeton, Pennsylvania Fire
January 1899
Early last Monday morning there was a disastrous fire at Galeton, Potter
county, which involved a
loss of about $40,000. The fire started in the Kelley block on Main street
and quickly spread to the other wooden buildings occupied by the
Elmer Hardware
Company, Higgins Grocery, the Star clothing store and
Reese's hotel. The
dental office of Nickerson & Jackson and the office of Dr. Johnson were over the
hardware store.
The loss was partially covered by insurance.

Dr. Leon G. Nickerson, who went from this borough recently and opened a
dental office at Galeton, lost all his furniture tools and material in the fire
the other night. His insurance was only about one-third enough to cover
his loss. Dr. Nickerson has, however, provided himself with a new outfit
and will soon be ready to welcome his customers in that neighborhood.
