Enoch Blackwell & Co. Store Fire
April 1884
Last Tuesday morning about three o'clock the
store of Enoch Blackwell & Co., at Lloyd, on the
Pine Creek railway, was totally destroyed by
fire, together with all its contents. The
post-office was located in the building.
The fire was undoubtedly of incendiary origin,
as the safe was found with the door blown off
and the contents destroyed. The marauders
made an almost bootless errand, however, if they
were in quest of money, for the safe did not
contain a dollar, and most of the account books
were kept in another building, but they secured
about $12 in postage stamps. The safe had
stood unlocked for months; but the thieves
drilled the lock and exploded it with powder,
when they might have got in with far less
trouble. It has been customary for the
people in that region to take money to Mr.
Blackwell for safe keeping, and sometimes he as
had as high as $4,000 in the safe, but a few
months ago he decided not to incur the risk of
robbery any longer, and he has since declined to
receive such deposits. The loss on
the building and stock of goods was about
$4,000, with an insurance of $1,700 in
Young's
agency in this borough. We are informed
that Mr. Blackwell will rebuild his store at
once.
