Mercer, Pennsylvania
Mercer County Court House
Fire
February 25, 1866
On Sunday morning February 25, 1866, fire
broke out in the Court House. It was first
discovered in the cupola and was thought to have
started through stove pipes that had been
rearranged the week before to accommodate
cooking stoves brought into the building for
some type of festival that used the Court House.
Apparently someone forgot to return the pipes to
their original configuration, and when the stove
was lit to heat the building on Sunday for
church services the fire broke out.
