Black Diamond Steel Works Fire
August 16, 1886
A PITTSBURGH FIRE.
The Black Diamond Steel Works Suffer a $100,000
Loss.
Pittsburgh, Pa., Aug 16.-- A fire that
threatened to be the most disastrous in this
city for years broke out a 1 o’clock in the
Black Diamond Steel Works of Park Bros. & Co.,
at Thirty-First street. Four alarms were sent in
and in a few minutes ten engines were on the
scene. The building in which the fire originated
was in the center of the immense works and
contained some of the most valuable machinery in
the establishment. After two hours hard work the
firemen succeeded in confining the flames to the
one building which was entirely destroyed.
Before the firemen had got away a large force of
men were put to work clearing way the ruins, and
the works started up last night as usual. Of the
1400 employees only 125 will be thrown out of
work and they only for thirty days. The loss
will reach $100,000, covered by insurance. The
origin of the fire is not clearly known but it
is supposed the natural gas company turned on
their pipes without notifying the works and the
gas spreading through the building became
ignited from the boilers.
