Forest Fires
April 1884

Lower Stony Fork, April 30, 1884. --
Forest fires are plenty here, or have been the
last few days. Michael Bastian's barn was
burned on Monday of this week. A fire
started the other day that caused a great deal
of trouble as well as considerable destruction
of property. It burned
Mr. Augustus Crousey's barn and about fifty cords of
shingle-bolts for George Wilson and
Alfred Ingerick. At last accounts the men on the
hill east of Stony Fork were doing all they
could to save D. Knapp's saw mill. Some of
the men have buried their goods in the ground,
taken their families and left.
Messrs. Hoyt
Brothers have men watching the fires in
this section.
