Tremont, Pennsylvania
Fire
August 17, 1878
LEBANON, PA, Aug. 18. -- About 10 last
night, the village of Tremont had a fire which
came near sweeping the town out of existence.
Thirteen houses were destroyed, composing the
business portion of the town, and on account of
there being no fire department, nothing coud
[sic] be done until it had burned is [sic]
course. A Masonic Lodge occupied the third
story of Baird's building, and had just lately
furnished and fited [sic] up the room.
Everything was completely destroyed. Loss,
$80,000, partly covered by insurance.

A fire at Tremont, Pa., Saturday night,
consumed a block of buildings to the business
portion of the town. The larger buildings
destroyed were Messrs. Murphy's general store;
Frank Huntzinger's dry goods and groceries;
George W. Bard's hardware store; Wm. Glanding's
[Granding's ?] confectionary; the Masonic hall
and post office buildings. Nine families
were rendered homeless. Loss about
$50,000; insurance $25,000, in Pennsylvania
companies. Much of the merchandise and
furniture removed to places of safety was
stolen.

In August, 1878, a fire occurred in the
eastern part of [Tremont], among the stores and
business places: At that time the town had no
fire department, and it was not extinguished
until it had destroyed about half a square. The
loss was estimated at $100,000
