FIRE STARTS IN A COAL MINE
FIRE BREAKS OUT IN ONE OF THE MINES OF THE
READING COAL COMPANY AND MUCH DAMAGE IS DONE.
BIG BREAKER WAS FORCED TO SHUT DOWN AND MORE
THAN ONE THOUSAND EMPLOYES ARE OUT OF WORK.
Shamokin, Pa., May 6--Fire which broke out
last night in the Locust Gap Slope operated by
the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron
company--is still raging fiercely.
John and Mitchell
Boglan and
Michael Shannon, of Locust Gap, who
were in the mine when the fire started, were
unable to reach the surface and a rescuing party
is at work in an endeavor to release the
entombed men.
Locust Spring breaker, which prepared the Locust
Gap Coal for market was forced to shut down.
Rendering over one thousand men & boys idle.
