Schuylkillhaven, Pennsylvania Locomotive Boiler Explosion

November 14, 1892

THE BOILER LET GO

Frightful and Fatal Explosion of a Locomotive Boiler on the Reading Railroad Near Schuylkillhaven, Pa. --- Five Men Killed and Others Injured, One Fatally.

READING, PA., Nov. 15.
--- A frightful boiler explosion occurred on the Reading road a short distance about Schuylkillhaven about midnight. Five men were killed and several injured. The engine had just finished making a shift and had just been coupled to the train. As soon as steam was applied the explosion followed. Engineer COWEY was hurled against rocks, and every bone in his body was crushed. Fireman MOYER was hurled 100 yards away into a field, while others lay near the wreck.
The engine was No. 563 and belonged to the freight trade. On Sunday she was put on the coal trade and at the time of the accident was on her way to Palo Alto. The locomotive is a complete wreck. COWLEY and MOYER belonged to another crew and were dead-heading it home to Palo Alto. The others belonged to the engine which exploded.

The complete list of killed is:
WILLIAM COWEY [article spells it two ways], of Port Carbon.
WILLIAM MOYER,
of Palo Alto.
HARRY ALLISON,
of Palo Alto.
C. J. C. MACKEY,
fireman, of Port Carbon.
CHARLES KENDRICK,
conductor, of Port Carbon.

Brakeman MICHAEL DOBBINS, of Palo Alto, is probably fatally injured. The boiler was hurled 75 yards. Some of the dead were horribly mutilated.
