Montpelier, Vermont Fire
May 2, 1875

Montpelier, Vt., May 1. -- At 12
o'clock last night a fire broke out in
Bruce's
block, on Main street, which raged four hours,
destroying thirty stores and dwellings. A strong
wind prevailed, threatening the business portion
of the town, but fortunately the wind changed
and drove the flames to wards the dwellings.
Both sides of the street for nearly a mile were
burned. Fire companies from neighboring
cities contributed to the suppression of the
flames. The loss will be $150,000.
Montpelier, May 2. -- The total loss
by Saturday's fire is $114,000; insurance,
$58,000. This and other fires lately have
destroyed about half of the business portion of
the town, but arrangements are being made for
the rapid replacement of the buildings.
