Wisconsin Drownings

July 4th Holiday, 1932

Milwaukee, Wis., July 5 --(UP)-- Thirteen accidental deaths marred Independence day celebrations in Wisconsin over the week-end.

Six person were drowned....

Drownings

Roy Groenka, 24, Racine.

Paul Gromowski, 40, Marinette.

Emil Klesmit, 19, Polonia.

Miss Edna Hartwig, 22, Milwaukee

Ralph Hoffman, 21, Milwaukee.

Erwin Brausen, 15, Madison.

Fewer Drownings Than Usual

Drownings were fewer than usual because the rain and cold kept many families away from lakes and rivers Sunday.

A double tragedy occurred at Crooked lake, Oconto county, where Miss Hartwig and Hoffman lost their lives less than 300 feet from shore.  They had been riding in a canoe which overturned.  Eugene Meyer, 20, son of Assemblyman Emil Meyer, Milwaukee, almost drowned in an effort to save them.

Washed from Schooner

Groenka was drowned in Lake Michigan after being washed from the 36-foot schooner, Helena.  He and six companions were returning to Racine from the yacht races in Milwaukee.

Klesmit fell from a boat while fishing in Lake Emily, Portage County.

A guide in Marinette county, Gromowski drowned in Rose lake while conducting a group of Chicago businessmen on a fishing trip.

Brausen, an inmate of the St. Charles home for boys at Wauwatosa, was sucked under at the Hoyt park swimming pool there.

Went Swimming Too Soon, Drowns

Milwaukee, July 5 --(UP)-- A post mortem examination showed that Erwin Brausen, 15, a resident of the St. Charles home for boys, Wauwatosa, drowned Saturday because he went in swimming too soon after dinner.  Dr. W. T. Brussock said today.  Brausen came to the home from Madison.
