Hamilton & Merryman Sawmill
Fire
June
13, 1899
SAWMILL LOSS $75,000.
Big Hamilton & Merryman Plant at Marinette Burns
to the Ground.
Marinette Depot, Wis., June 14. – The
sawmill of the Hamilton
& Merryman company burned to the
ground last night at a loss of about $75,000,
with $40,000 insurance. The fire started from a
hot box in the mill and spread with great
rapidity. The Marinette fire department,
assisted by the Menominee department, fought it
well. Soon after the fire started a heavy
rainstorm set in and this was the only thing
that saved the lumber yard, shingle and planning
mills and a large part of the city. The wind was
blowing hard, but the rain wet everything so
that the sparks communicated no fire.
The mill will be rebuilt as soon as possible.
It was one of the oldest on the river. The
owners are A. C.
Merryman of Marinette,
I. K. Hamilton
of Chicago and W. C.
Hamilton of Fond du Lac.
In going to the fire
A. C. Merryman narrowly escaped
serious injury. The fire chief’s rig collided
with his carriage and the thill struck him on
the shoulder. Both vehicles were smashed. The
Menominee fire chief in coming to the fire, ran
over a man, name unknown, and probably fatally
injured him.
