De Pere, Wisconsin Train Wreck

June 29, 1900

EIGHT KILLED IN COLLISION.

Train Carrying Excursionists to a Saengerfest Runs Into a Freight Train.

Green Bay, Wis
. (Special). -- A north-bound passenger train on the Chicago and Northwestern Road, loaded with excursionists bound for the Saengerfest in this city, collided with a freight train at De Pere, five miles south of here. Eight persons were killed and thirty-four were injured.

The dead are: EDWARD KUCKLE and LAWRENCE PLAND, of Foud du Lac; GEORGE L. LLOYD, of Eden; CHARLES MIERSWA, MATT KORCHER and BURT IVES, of Oshkosh; ADAM WEBER and a man from Ashland whose name is unknown.

The accident happened just as the passenger train was pulling into the station. A double-header freight train was backing on to a side track to let the passenger train go by, but had not cleared the main track.

When the two trains came together the first coach, which was a combination smoking and baggage car, was driven through the second coach, where the loss of life occurred. The cause of the accident was the failure of the freight crew to give the passenger train the right of way.
