Washington, DC Methodist Church Fire, Jan 1904

One of the Handsomest Structures in Washington

WASHINGTON, D. C., Jan 30.---Luther Methodist church, one of the handsomest of Washington's architectural landmarks, was ruined by fire last night during the progress of a reception in honor of the seventy-eighth birthday anniversary of Dr. J. G. Butler, who has been pastor since the building was erected. The tower which fell before the blaze was extinguished, was built by George Ryneal, of Martinsburg, W. Va., in 1883, as a memorial to his father and mother. He had come on for the reception, and reached the scene just in time to see the monument of his affection fall in ashes. The loss is fully covered by insurance.
