Belle Glade, FL Head On Collision Kills Nine Dec 1958
NINE KILLED IN FLORIDA CRASH.
Belle Glade, Fla. (AP) - A policeman going to pickup his mother to spend Christmas with him and a carload of Puerto Rican farm workers collided head on early Sunday. Nine persons were killed and a tenth is in critical condition.
BEN McCOY, 48, a Negro patrolman in this small Florida community 75 miles northwest of Miami, was en route to Ocala for his mother when the accident occurred.
Police Chief Charles Goodlett said it appeared the Puerto Ricans' car was speeding when it veered into the wrong lane on a slight curve and smashed into the car driven by McCOY.
State police identified the others killed as:
TRINITINO RIOS TORES, 46;
JOSE MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ, 22;
JUAN LUCINO RIVERA, 26;
SIXTO DIAZ RIVERA, 39;
CARLOS ESTEVES VELAZQUEZ, 28;
BERNARDO GARZIA, 20;
JORGE RODRIGUEZ, 20;
and JAN DEMATO RAMOS, 28.
The survivor, CAMILO LOPEZ, 34, was reported in critical condition with internal injuries at Belle Glade Hospital.
