Robins Air Force Base, GA Helicopter Crash, Sep 1968


Robins AFB, Ga. (AP) -- Three Navy men were killed and a fourth critically injured Sunday when a helicopter crashed and burned 35 miles southwest of Robins AFB officers said.
The helicopter, based at Norfolk Naval Air Station, Va., was enroute from Norfolk to Pensacola, Fla. Naval Air Station. It crashed about 2 minutes after taking off from a refueling stop at Robins, public information officers said.
Two of the fatalities were:
Lt. (j.g.) J. C. CONNELL, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va.
Aviation Electricians Mate 3rd Class EUGENE KUCZINSKI, 24, Baltimore, Md.
The Robins spokesman said the helicopter was flying with three others when it crashed into a plowed field about 11 miles southwest of Perry and two miles south of Georgia 224.
Crewmen in the other helicopter landed, rescued the bodies, and transported the survivor to Robins hospital. He was in critical condition late Sunday.
The cause of the crash was not determined.
