Savannah, GA Steamer W. T. WHEELESS Fire, Apr 1881


NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 18. – The steamer W. T. Wheeless, with her entire cargo of freight, was destroyed by fire at 6 o’clock this morning, at Savannah, Ga. The fire originated in the after part of the cabin, and in 40 minutes the vessel was a total loss. No lives were lost. Pilot Ed Turner jumped from the wheel-house and broke his leg. Bud Horn saved his life by jumping through the fire. Nothing saved. The wharf also was burned. The Wheeless drifted down the river and set fire to the schooner Walton, which was partly burned.
