Elberton, GA Flood, Aug 1908

Elberton, Ga., August 26.---(Special)---As a result of the twenty-four hours of continuous rain, all the bridges in Elbert county have been washed away, including the new steel bridge across Broad river, connecting Elbert and Wilkes counties. The Seaboard bridges across Savannah and Broad rivers are both gone, a freight train passing over the latter a few minutes before it floated away.

Passenger train No. 52 was caught this side of the Savannah river and attempted to get back to Elberton, but found that the trestle over Beaver Dam creek had been carried away.

The city electric light plant was completely destroyed and the city waterworks plant submerged, but it is hoped the latter will be saved. All bottom crops are overflowed and upland crops badly damaged.

The loss is incalculable.
