Chicago, IL Palace Livery Stables Fire, Dec 1898

Chicago, Dec. 16. -- The collapse of a wall during a fire in a livery stable on Cottage Grove avenue killed two firemen and injured a number of others.

The dead:

Lieutenant Matthew Meyer of Truck Company 21, burned by falling wall, instantly killed.

Patrick Ahern of Truck Company 11, burned by falling wall and killed.

The building was a 2-story brick structure. The lower floor was occupied by the Palace Livery Stables, while the second store contained living apartments.

The fire broke out in an abandoned elevator shaft in the rear of the building and spread with great rapidity.
