Gary, IN Auto And Train Crash, Aug 1956

AUTO-TRAIN CRASH WORST OF MISHAPS.

A train destroyed an automobile and killed a divorced Gary woman, her male companion and four of her children in Indiana's worst traffic accident of a weekend in which highway crashes killed 12.
Two other children were injured critically in the crossing crash, which occurred late Saturday night on Ind. 49, about 15 miles southeast of Gary in Porter County.
The dead were identified as:
MRS. VALERIA SHUPE, 29, Gary;
ELGIE C. Rose, 33, of the same Gary address;
and MRS. SHUPE'S children, DAVID, 2; PENNY, 7; VALERIA MAE, 10; and ROBERTA, 11.
Reported still in critical condition in Doctor's Hospital, Michigan City, today were RICKIE, 3; and JESSE, 8. Another of MRS. SHUPE'S children, Gale, 10, had stayed behind with neighbors.
Officers said it was impossible to tell who was driving the car. It was hit by a Elgin, Joliet & Eastern freight train.
