WASHINGTON, Aug. 15.---Frank Hayes was almost instantly killed and Edward Preston and Charles Lucas received frightful injuries in the Blackburn coal mines, fourteen miles south of here by the explosion of a charge of powder last night. The men ignited several fuses and ran out of harm's way. One charge failed to explode and while they were in the act of inserting a new fuse the powder exploded. Hayes was buried beneath tons of coal and died soon after being dug out. Preston and Lucas are still alive with little hopes of recovery.
