Clinton, IN Coal Mine Fire, Jun 1897

SIXTEEN MEN ENTOMBED.

Fire Raging in the Norton Creek Co Mine in Indiana---Loss of Life Probable.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., June 13.---News has been received here that a terrific fire is raging in the Norton Creek coal mine.

Details concerning the disaster are lacking, but it is thought that sixteen men are cut off from escape, and have probably perished in one of the lower shafts.

The origin of the fire cannot be ascertained. Hundreds of the relatives and friends of the imprisoned miners have gone to the scene of the disaster, and every effort is being made to check the ravages of the flames.

The loss to the company will aggregate an immense sum, even if the entire mine is not destroyed.
