Shell Rock, IA Town Fire, Oct 1908
SHELL ROCK, FIRE SWEPT.
SEVENTEEN BUILDINGS INCLUDING CITY HALL AND FIRE STATION.
Shell Rock, Ia. -- Seventeen buildings in the heart of the city were destroyed by fire at an early hour on the morning of Oct. 19. For a time the entire town seemed doomed. Only the arrival of the Waterloo and Waverly departments enabled the fire fighters to stay the course of the flames. The fire started in the hose house and the early loss of the fire fighting apparatus made the Shell Rock fire fighters almost helpless. The engine house and its entire contents, including the engine were burned. The total loss will be about $25,400, with insurance totaling $12,800.
