Mt. Pleasant, MI House Explosion, Feb 1948

BLAST, FIRE KILLS MOTHER, 5 TOTS; HUSBAND HURT.

Mr. Pleasant, Mich. (AP) -- A mother and her five children were killed and her husband was critically injured when an explosion and fire flattened their home here yesterday.
Michigan state police identified the dead as:
MRS. MARGARET WOHLSCHEID, 27.
BEVERLY JEAN WOHLSCHEID, 9, her daughter.
PATRICIA WOHLSCHEID, 2, her daughter.
ROY WOHLSCHEID, JR., 10, her son.
RICHARD WOHLSCHEID, 7, her son.
DALE WOHLSCHEID, 5, her son.
The husband, ROY WOHLSCHEID, 35, who suffered severe burns and multiple fractures, was in the Mount Pleasand Community Hospital, where attendants said he was not expected to live.
Investigators reported that the explosion occurred in the kitchen, presumably from a gas cooking stove, demolishing the modest, five room home at 7 a.m. yesterday.
The blast tore out the walls, causing the roof to cave in, and the whole ruin began to blaze furiously.
Neighbors aided firemen in pulling the bodies of the mother and her five children into the yard, and rescued WOHLSCHEID, who lay among the debris on the living room floor.
State police said that WOHLSCHEID told them he had left his bed a short time before the explosion occurred.
He related that he heard a "boom" and the next instant the house disintegrated around him and burst into flames. As he lost consciousness, he said, the room was crashing around him.
The bodies of his wife and five children were found strewn about the two bedrooms where they had been sleeping.
