Dearborn, MI Apartment Fire, Dec 1976
Dearborn Michigan Fire Department responded to a report of a apartment fire at Wyoming and Dix at 6:15 AM on December 16 1976. Battalion Chief George Schlief stated All but three of the Dearborn Fire Department responded to the fire for a total 37 fire fighter worked the fire. Fire Fighters made several rescues by ladder. 20 residents of the apartment were removed for the building. Fire Marshal Michael Was stated the fire began in the ground level stairway at the rear of the building the cause is suspicious. The apartment was occupied largely by Arab men.. Ella Thomas who owns Martha's Restaurant on the ground floor of the building stated she was starting her day and an explosion took place. Thomas went out the front door and saw here 22 year old daughter Margaret leaning out of her apartment window over the restaurant with smoke bellowing out the window. . Margaret told arriving fire fighters to rescue 76 year old Georgia Budai who is blind, Fire Fighters carried Budal and Luellia Mae Hebel age 67 to safety and transported them to the hospital with smoke inhalation, Nagi Sholatee age 18 jumped from the second floor and was taken to the hospital. Fire Fighters found Mohamed Elechwae age 34 and Taher Ali Algahim age 32 dead in a third floor apartment passing away for intent heat. Dearborn Fire Fighter Mike Birrell was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation in his rescue attempts.
