Mount Clemens, Feb. 22 (AP) - Four persons were injured fatally and a fifth critically Friday night in a collision involving three cars north of nearby Selfridge Air Force Base.
One of two survivors of the crash, GERALD N. BERNARD, 27, of Chesterfield Township, was held today for investigation of manslaughter. He was one of the drivers.
Killed were CLARENCE STARKE, 51, and his wife, FLORENCE, 50, and MRS. WILLIAM VICE, 52, all of Mount Clemens, and MRS. CHRISTINE W. SHIELDS, 47, of Walled Lake.
MRS. SHIELDS' husband, THOMAS, 40, was in critical condition in a Mount Clemens hospital. BARNARD apparently suffered only a cut lip.

Admits Drinking.
Assistant Prosecutor Charles Towner said BERNARD told him he had been drinking and could not remember what happened.
The prosecutor said that deputies told him BERNARD'S car could have started a chain-reaction crash, and that it rammed STARKE'S from the rear either before or after it collided head-on with SHIELDS'. Deputies today, were seeking to find exactly what did happen.
The STARKES' car was loaded with groceries and they apparently were returning from a shopping trip when the accident happened at 8 p.m.
BERNARD is an employee of Consumers Power Co.
