Niles, MI Head-On Auto Collision, Mar 1941

SIX DEAD IN HEAD-ON CAR CRASH SUNDAY.

Niles, Mich., Mar. 24 - (UP) - Six South Bend persons were killed yesterday in a head-on automobile crash on U.S. 6 near the Michigan-Indiana state line.
The dead are:
MRS. EDITH MAY BEECHER, 54;
MRS. BERNICE RYAN, 33, her daughter;
EDGAR KLAVERENGA, 34;
DR. ULYSSES J. ROTHBALLER, 33;
JOHN ROTHBALLER, 21, his brother;
ROBERT JEFFRIES, 24, a student at Tri-State college in Angola.
DR. ROTHBALLER, driver of a car going north, attempted to pass the car ahead. He hooked the rear fender of the car he was passing and lost control of the car. The machine swerved across the road and crashed into the car driven by KLAVERENGA.
The two women, both passengers in KLAVERENGA'S car, were killed instantly and KLAVERENGA died in a local hospital.
Coroner William Piefer of Niles said a coroner's jury would investigate the crash.
