Lapeer, MI Train And Auto Collision, Oct 1959

TRAIN KILLS 5 OF FAMILY IN MICHIGAN.

Lapeer, Mich. - (UPI) - A father and four of his children were killed yesterday when their car skidded on wet pavement at a railroad crossing near here and smashed into a speeding New York Central passenger train.
LYNN D. MORRIS, 38, Otisville, Mich., was killed instantly when he apparently saw the train too late.
Also dead are his children:
MARSHA, 9;
MICHAEL, 3;
GEORGE, 2;
and JOY, seven months.
Critically hurt in the crash were MORRIS' wife, BETTY, their eldest boy, EARL, 16, and daughter, LYNDA, 11.
Lapeer County sheriff's deputy Karl Moldenhauer said it looked as if MORRIS applied the brakes as soon as he saw the crack "Beeliner" coming, but a high bank on the left side of the road hampered his vision until too late to stop.
The car skidded 105 feet on the wet blacktop.
