Detroit, MI Synagogue Explosion, Jul 1880

A Church Blown Up.

A singular and unexplained accident occurred at Detroit, Mich., on the 12th inst. A terrific explosion took place at Shaadry-Zedek Jewish Synagogue, blowing out a portion of the side wall, bulging the other wall and destroying the fine interior. The damage cannot be estimated, but it is not less than $5,000. Probable theories of leaking gas, gunpowder, etc., are advanced, but why the deed was committed, if intentional, is a mystery.
